Hey guys, I have a different question. I was revving my engine the other day, and I noticed that it does not go over 4,000 RPM. It almost seems as the fuel cuts off. It will go up to 4,000 and jump down and back up, but never over 4,000. Can you guys provide me with any explaination why?

 

were you free reving it or accully moving? If your driving and you floor it, will it rev past 4k?

 

I never had the chance to actually drive it and try to go over 4,000 Rpm, and I probably won't. (I'm 15 and have to drive with my parents.) So I've just been able to free rev it. It's a 97 3.8.

 

First of all it is pretty dumb to rev an unloaded engine as it can cause serious damage. Many GM engines have a rev limiter that prevents just what you were trying to do, revving the engine with no load connected (neutral/park).

 

Yup, there's a rev limitor that prevents you from revving past 4k in idle. That's normal.

Yea, its perfectly normal as long as your free reving it. You should never rev an engine that high with no load, like pete said.

my dad's vette doesnt have one, neither did my 96. love pushing clutch in and making motor scream as you're passing a group of kids. specially if there's hot girls.
