Electric Superchargers

I'm looking at electric superchargers. I think the concept is great but what I see out there misses the mark in design. Also I don't believe some of their claims. At best, you should only get a 5 to 8% boost.

Has anyone tried an electric supercharger on their car?

I have a 98 3.8 with several mods.

They're probably mostly for v8s no?

There's super chargers for more then just v8s

you guys are kidding, right?

Electric superchargers are a gimmick, look into them no further then you already have.

Cheeks we agree... holy poo...

ok legit facts.

to actually increase the compression and be functional the superchager would have to be mechanical and directly sealed with the intake. electric supers cant do either. an electric super is about as effective as blowing a hairdryer down your intake. (yes mythbusters did show a gain of 3-7 hp for blowing a cold air hair dryer down the intake) The only problem with that thought is that your car will need the comp tuned to match and the emissions stuff removed to see this gain. otherwise it will just show that you are running to lean and dump a ton of fuel killing your mileage. (this will register as a 2-3 hp jump for having more fuel). Also if the fan isn't pushing at least 2000 cuft of air in the intake then its just slowing the air down. (i believe 2000 cuft per minute is the naturally aspirated suction rate.)

The biggest drawback is finding an extension cord that's long enough for your commute.

You can always mount a portable generator on a trailer attached to the car and power the hair drier with it. That way a 25 ft extension cord will be long enough. To drive an electric supercharger hard enough to make a difference it will need at least a 15 hp motor which means the portable gen should be able to push 10 to 15 KW, pretty good size unit, lol

i thought the biggest drawback was on the underside of a male elephant...

And here I thought only the design of having the motor blocking the air flow was a bad ideal. Thanks guys.
