Driveshaft Installation Questions

I just finished changing out my driveshaft. It seemed too easy, so I must have missed something...Should I have lubed the shaft before putting it in the tranny? The universal could not lineup evenly in the yoke about an 1/8 recessed difference on one side. Is that an issue? Just want to make sure it doesn't crap out 10 miles down the road.

If it is truly that easy everyone should get rid of their 2 piece driveshaft in the V6.

Thanks

You should not have had any problem getting the U joint in the pocket. If it is sticking out a little it will cause vibrations and kill the U-joint. Try loosening up the U bolt and pushing it in. Dont be suprised if the other side wants to pop out a little since it is the grease holding it out. If needed take the cap off and check for a displaced needle or excess grease.

No lube needed befoer putting the shaft in the trans, just the 4 bolts on the diff and that is it.

P.S. you may want to take the caps off and ckeck for displaced needles and put them back in line if they fell out.

It's a good idea to lube the outer part of the slip yoke so you don't scratch the new seal (I'm assuming you hopefully put a new seal in the tail housing)?
Are you saying the u-joint isn't seated all the way onto the pinion yoke? It shouldn't be jacked out at all, and should have no gap between the clamp and yoke where it bolts on. If it is rocked out, it will eventually find it's own way down, then your clamp will be loose, and you'll throw the u-joint making a bad mess of your new drive shaft (and floor boards).

The caps are well seated in the pockets and are tightly clamped. I did have one fall off when I was putting it on but it went back on ok. The caps are not flush they are actually slightly recessed inside the end of the clamp. Not sure if you can see the clamp overlapping in the photo. I hope this is ok. I think that is how the old ones were, but I do not remember.

That inset is just how it is supposed to look, just make sure the caps are good and tight.

Always take pictures before you take the old parts off... ;)

Hey I'm looking to do the same thing with my 96 3.8. Where did you get your new driveshaft? Is it the same driveshaft that would normally fit the Z28?

I bought this one for $260 with a 10% coupon not too bad of a deal, steel ones are close to $200 new and I did not want a junkyard special.

Yes any drive shaft thats for a 1993-2002 camaro will fit in the V6 or a V8. The one peice is alot better then the 2 peice shafts. the z28's have steel shafts and the ss have the aluminuim shafts. Hope that helps you.
