Dramatic drop in value?
I knew it was going to happen after the 5th gen came out but I have been seeing a pretty rapid drop in value in the 4th gens in the last 8 months. I thought when dealers started to buy for spring I would see that change but if anything they are still dropping. I saw a 02 3800 5 speed sell for 2K under a green light with 72K on the clock it was a clean car. A years ago that was a $3500-3800 car at auction. When I redid my 1996 a couple of years ago that was because I could not find anything that was not junk for under 4K.
I am seeing that same things with the V8s but the LT1's more then the LS1. I think the rep for the LS1 may help out the 98-02 z28 owners but man I think the next year or two will be hard on the 4th gens. Imagine a world where 3rd gens are worth more then 4th gens. I don't think its far away. |
As usual it is a matter of supply and demand. The older cars are disappering and if enough people still buy them the price will stay high.

I could never understand the reasoning when someone would say "the new model Camaro is going to hurt the old model values". What, are buyers actually deciding whether to buy a $4k Camaro or a $40k Camaro? No they're not, those are two totally different buyers, in different income brackets. I think you're just seeing a phase, part of which is due to the season.

Usually car values of cars start high, devalue for about 10-25 years then the survivors start gaining money based on rarity, demand, etc.
Thing about 4th gen Camaro's is they are NOT rare, at least not yet. You can go on craigslist, (at least in my area) their are between 30-50 4th gen sales posts a week. The market is saturated. They are very pretty, fun machines, but not rare. I do see the market going up but we're still in the downswing. |
I can't imagine 3rd gen being worth more than 4th ever. Just so many 3rd gens to begin with.

3rd gens aren't that easy to find..at least not compared to a 4th Gen. I've searched high and low, (craigslist, pennswoods, ebay) for a 1982 Z28 and can't find one. I see more second and fourth gens than third gens...I think it's cause the 3rd gens weren't the prettiest or the most powerful of the family so when they got wrecked or rusted, etc, people just junked them.

Concur.
Wish I'd found one of those 3800 5sp 4th gens for my commute... Last Sept I paid 2100 for my cherry 95 Z28 T56 with 150k miles. Did I over-pay?!? |
that is a Microeconomic.
