The Monsoon head units did use an amplifier; also the Monsoon system is a 1.5 DIN.

This shouyld help you out on any questions you might have on the Monsoon units:

Shouldn't matter what the head unit is for the speakers. Either a Camaro or TA HU will fit, aftermarket HU will just require an adapter for the plugin

I don't think that just the head unit has enough power to run all of the speakers on it's own, or at all. You could always run an aftermarket amp.

If his car did not come with the Monsoon system, then he has a 4 speaker setup which is always run from just the HU. Cars with the Monsoon system had the 8/10 speaker setups and used an external amp.

I dunno, I think the outputs might be different from regular stock HU because of the amp setup.. I.E. How bose amps have shared grounds n stuff..

As far as I know, the Monsoon name was just that, a name. When you upgraded to the Monsoon system, the HU remained the same as all additional speakers were powered by the amp.
