Cleaning engine
My engine compartment is filthy from the floods this past winter in my area and I want to clean it up. What's the best way to clean it? I've seen a lot of posts in various threads saying that Simple Green works best, is this true? Also other than the alternator what else should I cover up or be careful of?
dont get water in your alternator and especially your distributor (or coil packs) (or optispark)...
most electrical connectors are 'weather-pac' so they should be sealed from the elements..
rinse your bay, spray PURPLE POWER generously, and scrub it where you can scrub. rinse, and reapeat extra dirty spots or spots you missed
purple power works so good that i would almost advertise for them. no joke. it got my 700r4's case so clean, that the alunamin started to oxidize nearly minutes after cleansing it. Simple green is very similar stuff to purple power except simple green isnt as bad for your skin as Purple power... purple power makes your skin feel tacky and almost burns.

I always use engine degreaser and a power washer, covering vulnerable parts with plastic bags.
I've never used Purple Power. The reason why MelloYello's tranny case starts to oxidize right away isn't because of it being so clean, it's because Purple Power contains sodium hydroxide, which is a corrosive salt. It's also an active ingredient in drain cleaner. Guess you don't have to guess why his skin almost burns too!!

Found out the hard way that the purple stuff, and some other degreasers are VERY bad for your kidneys. Spent a couple hours cleaning the engine, inner wheels, etc, without wearing rubber gloves. Hands started peeling that night. Kidneys started hurting next day and was pissing like a racehorse. Went to the doc; had toxic levels of some chloride crap in my blood and it was beating my kidneys up. Gallons of water and 2 days later i was fine but WEAR gloves when you use that stuff.
But the stuff is a pretty color, isn't it?
In addition to gloves, be sure to use it in a well ventilated area too. If it can burn your skin and gizzards, it can't be good for your lungs either.

YES if your spraying it out of a spray bottle in a small garage you can feel it in your system... make sure its vented. you can also delute this stuff with water and it should still work fine. its concentrated
