Catalytic converter part number? or name
 

Hi all,

Theres a rattle from my exhaust on the passenger side under the car and a local garage thinks it is the catalytic converter.

Does anyone have a diagram of the exhaust system so I can show you which piece it is that is making the noise?

Also I wondered if the diagram shows what the piece is called as I have done some quick research and I'm not sure which replacement part I could be looking at?

OK I found a diagram so I can show you what I mean. It is the part labelled number 1.

That diagram is for the v8, on the v6 there is only 1 cat and it is after the y pipe merges. You can replace it with a universal one from Magnaflow, or you can buy another OEM one, though Magnaflow is probably a good bit cheaper.

It's not uncommon for the heat shield that's tack welded to the top of the cat to come undone and cause a rattle. That's more common that an internal rattle, caused by self-destruction. Get under the car, look for, and yank on the heat shield on the cat. It's very possible yours is flapping and just needs a tack weld or a strap clamp to hold it in place. That's not cause to replace the cat. If it isn't that, rap on the bottom of the cat with your fist, and listen if it sounds like rocks banging around inside (broken up internally). If so, then it needs to be replaced.

I think I am talking about the bit in the bottom right, just before the last sensor and wire. The wire is labelled 8.

My bad, I thought you had a v6.

The LS1 has two cats, one after each exhaust manifold. These actually do not have heat shields on them, but these are tucked way up on the side of teh engine, they are not underneath the car/underneath your seat.

Ok interesting, what do we think I am looking at them, a heat shield? Its dark here but I will get a detail pictures for you tomorrow, if it is a heat shield then thats great I guess

So that LS1 illustration is wrong then? It shows the drivers side cat somewhat vertically behind the engine, and the passenger side cat below the floor.

69, that illustration may be correct for a 1998 LS1 as it is labeled, because it had EGR. When I did the longtubes on my 02, without egr, both cats were tucked up high and bolted directly to the exhaust manifolds. On mine, there were no external heatshields, everything was just one unit. It may be a bit different on EGR equipped cars (pre 2000) with the cat placement.

You can see the start of the cat on the passenger side there. Where that 1998 diagram is showing the cat is where the 02 sensor is, and the exhaust pipe after the cat is bolted to the rest of the y pipe. The cat itself when isntalled sits very high and close to the engine.,
