i really dont think he is asking what the better motor is. to put a ls1 in a 93 z28 would be a costly project very much like switching a 4th gen v6 to v8. so much so that the money would be better spent building the lt1. for the bucks it would cost you to get the 350hp ls1 in the 93 you can reach 400 hp outa the lt1.

Thanks for the replies... I did not intend for this to be a bashing thread... more of a constructive debate... lets keep it between the lines... Guitar, the LS1 has its advantages, yes I know... but in my case of a 93 Z, it would be more cost effective to build an LT1 than an LS1... given my budget, I would probably have enough to buy an LS, 4L60E, and needed wiring and that's probably about it, I wouldn't have much left for mods... now as I said, the LS series of engines are beastly, and they have a place in the hot rod/drag racing world, but they still know their roots, (OHV Pushrod V8s) just like the Gen I and Gen II motors... BudBrown, I intend to stay with the LT platform... as previously mentioned, I will purchase the forged 396 short block, put it on a engine stand and work on it paycheck to paycheck... in the meantime, I will buy bolt ons for the stock LT1 (headers, intake, throttle body, etc.) All things that will bolt right on to the new 396. Take care of the tranny(rebuild, upgraded shift kit, torque converter) and address the rear end... the whole purpose of me starting this thread was to see if it was more cost effective to swap in an LS based motor or stay with the LT series and I think I will go with the LT series... either way, its going to be an exciting adventure

It gets the job done. Work with what you have.

I plan on running the car with bolt ons while I build the 396... I'm going to run the stock LT1 until she lets go, then transfer the bolt ons (headers, intake manifold, CAI, etc.) Over to the new motor and get back in the game

I'd stick with a stock 350 block with 4 bolt mains out of a Vette and run some spray if that isn't enough. The Golen 396 is a great foundation for an insane FI build, but it's way too much cash for a goal of 11s or 10s. You don't really need a $4000 shortblock.
