Hello, I'm interested in buying a 1994 Z28 I found for sale and I've seen it in person and it's great, I just have a question: The fourth gen I'm looking at has 95,xxx miles on the engine and transmission and I just wanted to know what the average life of them before I would have to replace them if I were to buy this car?

 

All depends on how they were used/abused and maintained. Properly maintained they will do 200K with no major problem, if beat on and abused 100K is lucky.

 

What Pete said. I have had two trannies fail in my SS already, and I'm just under 100k. LOL

Then, when it fails, look into a built tranny -- I just spoke with these guys at the Speed Inc. Open House last week, and they do some great work on built transmissions, and ship all over the world:

got my first 93, had 95k miles on it, took care of it and after a year the opti went, then the ignition modual, besides oil and plugs thats it for the next 90k miles. sold it and picked up the one i have.

Auto or manual?

 

Sadly, it's an automatic, but it's in the best condition in my price range that I could find.

 

my Z has 120k and needed a new trans and an engine rebuild the best cylinder compression was about 100psi

 

Have a trusted real mechanic check it out for you. Mechanics do not have Xray vision but most can spot a non-maintained car in minutes. For the cost of a 1/2 hour of labor that at least its not a complete basket case. We get a lot of people that show up here right after a purchase with major issues that would have been easly detected by a pro.

The best advice is if you buy this car, go buy a good extended warranty ASAP -- many good ones are only available before you get to 100k, and the others at higher mi. are usually not as comprehensive, from what I have seen...
