97 Camaro Z28 Cooling Issue.

Using a scanner, i can see no current codes stored.
What was interesting was i could view the ECU Coolant Temp info, which was a bit different than that on the cluster. There was an average of 15deg variance.
I waited till the reported ECU temp hit 228F and the cooling fans did indeed come on, which was pretty much in the red zone on the gauges. Is it safe to assume that the gauges are off ?
Should i suspect a bad gauge sensor ?

you should have two temp sensors. one for the computer and one for the gage. it may be that the scanner is reading the sensor on the water pump and the gage is reading the sensor on the head between the #1 and #3 spark plugs.

correct but if the gage sensor is bad you will have a false reading. you can test the sensor while still on the car.
