'97 Camaro V6 Won't Crank
I just bought a 97 Camaro 3.8 auto that won't start. So far I bypassed vats, tested the starter, tested the nss, and checked the fuses. Everything checks out good. I turn the key, the dash lights come on and the fuel pump primes. I try to start the car and I hear a click under the dash and the headlights go out but the starter does nothing. Any ideas?

A click similar to the click you get when you have a dead or almost dead battery? Throw some jumpers on it and give it a try...

The battery is almost new and tests fine. If I hotwire the starter it cranks over great.

bad ignition switch? or ignition switch arm is out of adjustment. turn the key on and jump starter and see if it runs. if so i would suspect the ignition switch or its in the column.

I already tried jumping the starter, that's how I know the starter is good. It turns over great but won't start.
I don't think the switch is out of adjustment as the headlights turn off and it clicks when I try to start it. I'm really stumped here. Does anyone have any pinouts of the ignition switch connector so I can rule that out? |
factory service/shop manual. go here and click/download the fbody 96. http://www.mediafire.com/?40mfgeoe4ctti

There is a start relay between the VATS module and the starter solenoid, if relay does not work properly the starter solenoid does not get energized.

I pulled the connector off the ignition switch and hotwired it there and got it to start and run. Ordered a new ignition switch for $30 and I think that will solve the problem.
Thanks for the help everyone! |
