you can use just the pump if you wish. the oem pump is the way to go, the cheap ones are unpredicable. can last 6 months or 6 yrs.

Cutting an access hole is useless, you can't remove the assembly without cutting the hard lines.

That looks like a 3rd gen BTW.

Drop the tank and do it right.

I didn't cut hard lines? Do you mean in the rag tops? Thats a 4th gen hard top. I think the rag tops have a brace that might get in the way. If your putting a cheap pump in you want the access pannel. Chances are you will be doing it again. I got 3 weeks out of my $179 one. It didn't leave me sit but it got so loud I could hear over the radio.

I was under the impression design of the fuel pump assembly was similar between a 3rd gen and 4th gen.

If that picture is of a 4th gen and not a 3rd gen, then I am correct, you cannot remove the assembly without first cutting the hard lines due to the routing.

If that isn't a 4th gen and the design is different, ignore me

I see no friggin way where you have enough vertical clearance in a convertible to lift the sending unit up and out. I'm afraid you'll need to do it the right way. Btw, below is what my 3rd gen looked like. I made an attempt at doing the booby hatch, but there was absolutely no way to weasel the sending unit and pump up, rotate it 90 degrees, then up and out with all the l-o-n-g steel lines attached. So, I decided I didn't want to cut the steel lines and then have to flare at least the high pressure supply line to re-connect it correctly and safely. Could be the lines on the 4th gens can be disconnected and split? Not on 3rd gens though.
