2001 Camero
 

Hi, I'm new to the forum so hope i'm posting this in the proper place. I recently purchased a 2001 Camero Convertable that looks almost new, inside and out, for the incredible price of $300.00. The catch is that the previous owner was driving it down the road and it just quit running.They were told the timing chain had jumped a link so they purchased everything needed to make the repairs. Before finishing the repair a personal situation, nothing relating to the vehicle, came up where they were unable to finish the project so I am going to make the repairs. They went as far as replacing the timing chain which is still one tooth off. I know the chain will have to be removed and the gear turned to align the timing marks but my question is, since they have had the timing chain off do I need to rotate the engine to place the #1 cylinder at tdc before aligning the timing marks? I don't know if the engine was rotate while the old chain was removed or not but want to be certain everything is set properly before reassemblying the components. Thanks

nope, just line up the marks correctly and good to go. its really rare for a 3.8 timing chain to jump.

Thanks Craby, I'm not a mechanic but enjoy working on my own vehicles. The timing is the one part of the vehicle where I began to lose confidence in my mechanical abilities but it sounds like this vehicle is fairly easy to replace the timing chain. You mentioned that it is rare for this engine to jump timing, the previous owner was in the process of replacing the chain when I bought the car. While they had the old chain off they could have misalighned the timing marks manually but the marks are off one link. Since the parts were already purchased by the previous owner and much of the work was already complete. I hope this is one of those rare instances where the chain did jump a like. I would like to get the Camero back on the road asap. Thanks for the information you gave.
