will it blow?

hello everyone, i have a 1981 camaro z28 and i'd love to put a street scoop on it. however to get it to clear the hood i would need to use a highrise or tunnel ram type intake. the car has a 350ci, 385hp fastburn crate motor with a single holly 800cmf vacum secondary carb in it and the thing cranks but i've heard that 350's and big/tall intake manifolds don't mix well. is this true or does my increased level of power put that myth to rest? OR is there any other way anyone knows of to raise the carb/filter assembely up about 5 inches?
thanks alot

I dont see why you would loose h/p if that is what your asking? As long as enough air is reaching the intake. I think thats what you are asking. If all your doing is putting a hood scoop and running some sort of "tube" down to you air filter, just make sure the diamater of the "tube" is enough to supply you with air.

Is this the crate that you have?

well, you have to be careful with a tunnel ram, your motor is most likey tuned to be a good streetable motor. meaning its powerband is m ore in the lower rpm to mid rpm ranges. throwin a tunnel ram on a motor tuned for street will make it run sloppy. i would prefer an edelbrock rpm air gap manifold, matched with a 2 inch spacer. you will probably have to tune your holley to match up with it, but you will get a lot of extra inches out of it. puting a functional air scoop on it will increase horsepower and torque only when you are moveing fast enough to force air down it. i would love to see this motor, could you post piscutres? sounds like a real nice machine.

A tunnel ram shouldnt hurt proformance or blow the engine. Street rodders use them all day lond on 350 SBC's. Just they require large rpms to be very useful. I heard that they idle poorly but I also herd that they do fine. I would suggest going to a hot rod forum and asking them. They usually do more radical things to their engines.

I would not use a tunnel ram if you are running around town. These intake will make more torque and will not blow your engine, but they like alot of rpm. Edelbrock makes a air gap that is dual plane and i would prefer that.

also, you could add a vilocity stack which will look sweet and add the inches. I was contemplating the same thing, I have a L88 hood and want to use the extra clearance. Also wanted it to stick through the stock hood. I can allways change stuff later. now I have a holley street dominator with a 1" spacer and a 750 double pumper holly. Later I might add more, who know.

Good luck
