Why would you want a 302.3 ?

Why would you want a 302.3 ?
I was doing some research and found that in 67 the scca trans am series had a limit on displacement of 305, so builders took a 327 block and put in a 283 crank making a 302.3 ci engine. I have one of these. I dont know if its origional but its a 327 I have a crank from a 283 and double hump heads, maybe a PO thing. Anyways, is there a demand for these?

RE: Why would you want a 302.3 ?
They can make more power than a 305 because of the large bore which unshrouds the valves and the short stroke that allows them rev higher without fear of doing damage to the bottom end. However, they are weak on low end torque, so in a fairly heavy car they need some stout gears and lots of revsto get the car moving. That is probably why Chevy dropped them in favor of the 305. They are good engines for racing if you happen to be in a class where displacement is limited, gearing is no problem, and you are looking to make the most power.

The real reason for the 302 was, of course, purely to get under the 305 cubic inch Trans Am limit with parts that were otherwise pretty economical to build (the factory did not have to design and machine a new crank just for the Z28, etc.). Original factory 302 engines are quite valuable, but a 302 built up from an old 327 and 283 parts would not be particularly valueable.
