Default Is the Vortec 5.7 350 stock?

New Camaro owner here, just recently bought a 1992 Camaro RS with the Heritage Package. It does not run and drive as I was mostly concerned with just finding a clean rolling chasis. (Plans on turning it into a drag car) However it does have an engine that the previous owner claims is a Vortec 5.7L 350, that he says came from the factory in the car. After researching for a bit I cant figure out if this engine did or did not actually come with the car from the factory. Some sites claim it did have the 5.7 as an option in '92, other sites show that the Vortec 5.7 wasnt produced until 1996. Any information as to if this engine did come from the factory or what engines should be in the car from factory would be greatly appreciated!

Vortec (8 cylinder, 6 cylinder, 5 cylinder, 4 cylinder) are truck engines. Your RS was available with either a 3.1 v6 or 305 v8 TBI engine (a real turd of a performer). The Z28 was available with either a 305 TPI or 5.7 TPI engine. So to answer your question, no, Chevy didn't put a truck engine in the 1992 Camaro, an engine that came out 4 years after your car was produced.

The L98 350 Tune Port Injection available in 92 was Z28 only and fairly rare, You can search Google images for 1992 L98. The "tuned port" part of the intake is very distinctive. The 305 is a much more common TPI car and looks just like the 350 but it is also Z28 only. No other 350 was every put in a 3rd gen Camaro.

What type of fuel injection does it have? If its a Throttle Body Injection (looks like a carburetor) you most likely just have the plain 305. It would be possible to put a Vortec engine under the 305 TBI but wow that would be a choke point.

Appreciate the responses, after finally bringing it home and getting a good look at it it's just the usual carburetor 305. But thankfully it does have the 700r4 tranny. I'll be sourcing a used vortec 5.3 to swap in and throw some boost on.

I assume you mean Throttle body injection. GM did away with the Carbs on passenger cars in 1986. Just a FYI while the trans is a 700R4 it has the clutch packs and gears to handle under 200 Hp. Even a Non- turbo 5.3 can push 350 HP with no problem That would rip that light weight almost 30 year trans a part. Since you are going to have the GM PCM for the 5.3 you might as well get a more modern computer controlled trans that was put behind the 5.3 from the factory or if you are serious about the turbo a 4l80e trans. FYI The 4l60e trans that came with the 5.3 is just a stronger version of the 700r4. GM just renamed it because of the problems people had in the 80's with the 700r4s.

Default Trans

The trans has no accumulator either.
it’s a “jerk” into gear when you move the shifter.
