Default Tune-Up

I decided to make a fresh thread since I wont be deleting emissions any longer.

Last year my step-father started a tune-up on the Camaro outside in the winter and it was such a pain in the *** and it was so cold that he replaced about 2-3 plugs on the front of the drivers side of the engine before calling it quits.

well, He is a busy man which is why I did not ask him earlier, but I was able to have him replace 4 more last night in his heated garage before it got too late in the evening to work on.

it was the 4 on the passenger side of the engine... and for that last one boy.... he had his arm in the engine compartment all the way up to his shoulder just to reach the plug. then of course there is no room in there and they were of course rusty and siezed... had to miraculously snake and wedge a crowbar in there without the socket and wrench falling off the plug, and use the crowbar for leverage to loosten the plug, about one wratchet click at a time after finally breaking it loose.

took an hour for just the one plug.

well we replaced all the wires, cap and rotor and all 4 of the passenger side plugs. its running alot better now.

the cords were absolutely shot. looked like a mouse had gnawed at them, olmost all of them were this way. cap and rotor not too bad but replaced anyways.

it was getting late so we decided to call it quits for the night and work on the rest of it some other time. its a matter of just replacing the plugs on the drivers side of the engine now.

next time we do it though, probably in a couple of weeks, we are going to have a very difficult time getting at that plug closest to the driver, on the drivers side of the engine as there is not enough clearance to wrench it from the top.

He was never able to get at that back plug the first time either if I recall correctly.

so my question is this.

how do you get at that spark plug closest to the driver, on the drivers side of the engine?
from the bottom? the car rides so low and working from the bottom while it is jacked up is not fun. i dont think removing the wheel will help as I dont see any access ports, I dont think removing the emissions would really help all that much where this plug is located, and yeah... removing the engine? hah! that would of course be easy to change the plug then, but oh HELL no we are not doing that.

what do you think guys?

When I changed the plugs on my 91, I did a few of them from underneath. And the rear drivers side plug was definitely from underneath. Someone had previously replaced the plugs, and obviously tried from above and got it cross-threaded into the head. The plug was only half way in![:@] You think yanking a plug is fun, try fixing the plug threads in the head with a thread chaser where you can hardly see what you're doing.

if its all stock there will be a shield there. DITCH it lol. i was working on mine when i was putting headers on and cut my hand, i got so pissed i got a torch and blasted that b*%# but i get mad easily. now i have headers and have my own system on how to get all 8 in and out in about 45min to an hour. Go from underneath and have someone on top guide the wrench and u turn it. dont use a socket.
