smog pump bypass {air pump} pull or replace
i have a 90 rs 305 the barings are going out on the smogpully. i think, but it may be the air conditioner. it sounds like the smog pump. should i pull it off and run a shorter serp belt or replace the smog pump? if i pull it will that confuse the computer and make it run ruff or not do any thing at all. ive also been told that it might bust horse power by 15 to 20 hp. ive heard both. from 3 or 4 people at parts store etc. i need more feed back thanks for helping.
All it does is pump air into the exhaust. They don't really rob that much HP as they turn pretty free when working proper. You alternator under a load will take more to turn. But if you dont have emisions don't worry about it. If you can run a smaller belt do it. I know a pully is made for it because one came in my GMPP serpintine belt kit. Some pick ups in the 90's a;so did not have air pumps. There may be an electrical conector on a valve that the air pump hoses hook to. If you can leave that valve and wire hooked up then you should not have an computer check engine light on.
