Intake Manifold Gasket info
Hey guys long time no talk. I am posting this from my phone so if there are typos I apologize!
I have a 1990 Nissan 300zx N/A that needs to be re-timed and I am looking for a trade because I am moving soon to Austin TX and I don't have much time to work on it. I have just been offered a very nice condition 89 Firebird Formula WS.6 and he claims that the only thing wrong with it is it needs a new intake manifold gasket. How much would I be getting myself into, how much work would it be to replace the gasket? I know I could do it it's just that my time schedule sucks so I need to know how much work would be involved and if it's worth it. I will post pics when I get home. It has 79K and is only 2 owner in 1 family. Looks very nice! Thanks for all of your info and help guys! |

Come on guys! 40+ views and no help? I know I've been gone a while but has this forum died that much? I need some info, this guy wants to trade and I want to trade. I'd love to add another F-Body to my Collection, but I don't know much about 3rd Gens!

Btw, I forgot to mention it DOES run but he said it runs really rough and tries to die and it just needs a intake manifold gasket.

That car looks to be in really nice shape. Replacing the intake gasket isn't all that hard, it's just a matter of taking it apart and putting it back together again. Take plenty of pictures so you can remember where all the wires and hoses went. Then flag the wires and hoses with masking tape noting where they connected to. When you remove the distributor cap, make a reference mark on the base to line up with the rotor, so you have them line up when you reinstall the dist. Be sure to have your battery disconnected so you don't bump the engine over and lose your place. Drain your coolant, either at the petcock on the radiator if it has one, or by removing the lower radiator hose. After the intake is off, scrape clean all the gasket surfaces, and finish off with sandpaper. Lumps or chunks left behind can likely result in a leaky gasket. I prefer to use the fel pro blue gaskets, but don't use the rubber end valley gaskets if the set comes with them. Instead, put down a bead of RTV, and lower the intake straight down without dragging it. Pick up a repair manual if you need to, or google some procedures. Youtube is another source to visually walk you through these steps. The job can easily be done on a Saturday, but that all depends on your skill level.

Ok, I wish someone on here had a write up on it or something lol! So I will have to remove the distributor? What else will I have to remove other than the manifold and hoses?

Seriously, a $20 repair manual from the parts store will be a good investment.
Check AutoZone's website too, they have online repair instructions for a lot of stuff. |
