Default RE: Auto vs Manual

i love manuals simply because of engines braking, skip shifts, burnouts, and traction control. with an auto, if you let off the gas and you dont have it selected to a gear, it will shift, especially if you spin. however, even though i love manuals, im glad my z has an auto. ive sat in a manual third gen before, and there is no room for my arm to move comfortably while shifting gears-i kept hitting my elbow on the center console arm rest. im happy though because the previous owner had a shift kit installed when he had the tranny rebuilt after he blew it out. i finally got my tv cable adjust, and it shifts right at 4500 every gear.

I personally find manuals to be more fun...but thats just my personal preference.

If I were driving in bumper to bumper traffic daily, I would go for an auto. If the car was just for fun out on the back highways, or empty interstate, I would go for the manual.

thanks for all the points of view. i did some research and have come to the conclusion that i won't be dissapointed w/ a stalled A4. i'll keep it at a pretty low stall seeing that it will be a daily driver

IF you're going to use it as a commuter, get an auto.

The 4L60E is a pretty nice transmission, with the manual you'll get a bit better mileage, but if you're into running fast 1/4 mile times, an auto with a high stall will be best. I have an auto in my car and I'm not displeased at all, it shifts hard and fast when I want it too, but if you're easy on the gas, it'll shift very smoothly. The manual has a more agressive 1st gear than the 6-speed anyway(that's including the 3:73 final drive on manuals and the 3:23 final drive on the auto). I like my auto, but some people swear by manuals, it's really a personal preference thing I guess...if you like one better, go for it, but if you don't care, the auto will be cheaper.
M6 cars had 3.42s, autos had 2.73s or 3.23s

the 700R4 in mine (basically a non electroinc 4L60) is quick and shifts hard compared to the slobish 4R70W in my mustang,

ratcheting shifter and full manual valve bodies would be awsome
