Default 85 Z28 with charging issues.

I have a 1985 Z28 (305,manual shift) that sat for a couple of years in a garage after being smacked in the rear end. I got the bodywork done and had it repainted. Everything enginewise seems sound and there dont seem to be any leaks or other issues. A day or so after draining and refilling the engine fluids and installing a brand new battery, I tookit out for a spin andafter filling it up at a gas station, it wouldnt start. The battery was very weak. I had a couple guys help me push start it and I took off to the closest auto parts store, which in this case was autozone. The guy there came out and tested the alternator and it was putting out just over 9 volts. I purchased a new alternator and went home. While I am byno means any kind of wrench, I didnt have any problems installing the alternator. Straight forward procedure and I made sure the belt was properly tensioned and lined up, the wires were properly put back on,and I cleaned and greased the battery terminals. I charged the battery and then took it for a spin. Same thing. Weak battery. Wont restart after being shut off. The dash guage for the alternator reads around 9 volts. Like I said, I'm no wrench and hope someone here might be able to offer some information or somewhere I can look next to hopefully resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Spike
