Hi, I am wanting to put a 427 in my 70 camaro, I just can't find one to build to put in it. I have a good core 454 and I was wondering if it was possible to put a 396 crankshaft in it and run 454 pistons to get a 427. (I have heard a 427 is a 454 bore with a 396 stroke)

If this is possible, what all would I have to do to make everything work properly??? (Machine work, Rods etc.)

I know alot of you are wondering why I don't just run the 454 but my uncle put a 427 in a camaro and I just love the high RPM power it produces, I want something I can wind out.

wrong, a 427 is different than a 454. i have a 454 bored 60 over to a 468, it needs to be bored and you can build a 496, which is a 454 90 over. i have the block for sale. what is wrong with a 454??? you can build a 468 with a stroker kit to make about 650 hp. a 454 stock built will create 500 hp. I know aguy who builds engines, damn good ones too

uhm, i think ur wrong...ur need to bore and stroke a 454 to get it any over 464 cubes

to get a 454 to a 427...i think it was the bore that was diffrent with the same stroke...so you would just need to get the block sleved witch isent hard...any motor shop should be able to do it..and boring a motor.90 thou over?? thats pretty damd big...ive seen 396 blocks that find the water jacket at .30 thou over.

and i agree with the guy with the 1970 camaro...the 427 is the best..to me any ways of all the big blocks. its like a super sized small block, makes awasome power and can rev to high hell. ive got an 1968 427 in my camaro, its done .30 thou over to 431.89 or what ever it is and will pull hard in all gears to 7500rpms no problem*this is with really tall gears* and is making an easy 550hp

id say doo a little reserch on the 454 and 427 blocks and see what your options are

The 396 = 4.09" bore X 3.76" stroke
The 427 = 4.25" bore X 3.76" stroke
The 454 = 4.25" bore X 4.00" stroke

So your assumption seems to be correct, use a 454 block and a 396 crank and you wind up with a 427 engine. The thing I am not sure of, is if the 396 crank and 454 crank have the same size journals. All things being equal, the 427 , due to a 1/4" shorter stroke, should be able to rev higher than a 454 before blowing itself up.

they can rev to high hell, mine has been over 7 a few times and dosent even blink an eye

I agree with you, but rev them high enough and they will blow. Good reason for rev limiters. However, 7000 RPM is not outlandish for a properly put toghether big block, pro stockers rev their 500" big blocks to around 8500 RPM.

witch i find amazing.....id be scared to try that. main reason i picked up this 427 when i could, was used in a drag boat, olny had 3 runs on it, so just swaped a few things and threw it in
