Default 3rd Gen Questions from a 4th Gen Owner

Hey 3rd Gen Guys & Gals! I am no stranger to Camaro's especially of 4th Gen 93-02 as I own 2 right now... 97SS M6 & 00 Z28 A4, I just sold my 93 Z28 a few weeks ago to free up some funds for my 97SS Build.

My wife loves the 3rd Gens (90-92) & I want to get her a 92 Z28/IROC? As a surprise. I have a few questions...

•What is the Z28 rated @ HP & Torque wise from the factory?

•What are the most common issues overall?

•How are the brakes?

•What are some of the most sought after options?

•Have to get t-top

It needs to be an auto.. Which auto did GM use in the 92 Z?

Here is what I have planned to do to right off the bat...

•18" Anthracite or Chrome 97SS style wheels.
•275/35/ZR-18 Tires (brand not decided yet)
•Window Tint
•Stereo Deck/Speakers/Etc..

Thank you in advance.

Alright. HP depends on the year and the engine. Since you're looking for a '92, you can expect 235/315 from the TPI 305, and 250/325 from the TPI 350. Be careful, as they are not visibly different. Check the VIN number to be sure of what engine the car has. The sixth digit should be an 8 for a 350.

The IROC-Z was only built between 1985 and 1990, and the Z28 was offered between 1982 and 1987, and again for 1991 and 92. If you're going for an IROC, your best bet is an '87 or earlier, as it was decontented in 1988 to make up for the loss of the Z28.

Most common issues will be leaking t-tops, o-ring seals, and door sag, I would say, but the other guys would probably know more than me.

I've got stock four-wheel disks on mine, and they're great. I had some issues with the calipers sticking when I got it, but otherwise I've never had trouble with them.

The 1LE package would be the rarest, most sought-after option, but it cuts down on some of the creature comforts and might not be something you'd want to go for. It's also extremely rare. It's basically a performance option, bigger brakes, stiffer suspension, harder shock absorbers, a baffled fuel tank.

As far as t-tops, as said they will almost certainly leak, which could cause some mold problems. My understanding is the brackets are different for different years, but again I'm not 100% sure.

And the auto transmission was the 700r4. 4-speed automatic with overdrive, and a ludicrously high 1st gear ratio to make up for the comparative lack of power compared to the 1st-gens.

And this is just my personal opinion, but 18" rims really don't suit the car. Stick with the 16s and see if you can get the older style IROC rims, with only one stripe on 'em.

And feel free to check out my car if you like. '87 IROC-Z, stock as the day she was built.

As a daily driver I would look into a V8 RS due to the fact that they ride so much better than the stiffer Z28's of the day. The IROC name was dropped in 1990 due to the fact that Dodge became the official sponser of the International Race Of Champions racing series.

He is right on those problems. I am on my second 84 Camaro Z28. Love the car. Wish i had my first 1. I have never had an servere mechanical problems with either of mine. He is right with the t-tops leaking. They all do unless weatherstripping is replaced. Door sag is real bad, but the new bushes are only like 5 bucks if you want to replace them. 18s dont look to bad on the cars but i prefer 16, Maybe 17s in the rear. Also if it has an automatic hatch they truck lid will not be flush with the car lines. Never had an issues witht he brakes, good pads an rotors an the car stops very well. Any other questions fell free to ask
