Default 3rd gen

I'm looking to buy a 3rd gen with a 350 and making it into a car for the track.

What years were the IROCs made? And whats the diff between an IROC-Z & a Z28?

What are the HP & TRQ #s for the 3rd gen 350? and can u tell if its a 305 or 350 by looking at the car?

If not what do the 2 engines look like under the hood?

also how many miles are the engines good for and what are there stock 1/4 mile #s?

and about how much do they weight stock?

I would also be instressted in after market parts made for them such as headers & Cam shafts. Where can I find idems like this?

Thanks,
Stig

Irocs were from 85-90. The Z28 name was dropped for a while but came back in 91
The 350 did not come in a Camaro until 86. Look on the emission sticker for 5.7L
HP ranged from 230-245 and TQ from 300-345 depending on the year.
I like to shop summitracing.com for parts

Summit has a lot of good stuff. Jegs is decent, as well. If you are looking for specialized stuff, http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/or www.yearone.com both have lots of good stuff for restorations.

What sort of track are you talking about? Drag racing? Or real racing, like SCCA?

Im more into real racing like the le mans series & such. However maintaing a car for that type of track becomes alot more work & much more exspensive. I recently got into drag racing so I am going to make this into a full blown drag car.

If your going to make it a drag car, do not buy an IROC...they are alot more expensive and you will want to replace too much stuff anyways...

buy a V8 car...swap the base 305 for a built 350

I thought about it. But from pricing around I figure im better off finding one with a stock 350. I dont think I would save alot if any money by swapping out a 305 for somthing else. Besides If I had a 3rd gen with an empty engine I would be too tempted to do somthing crazy like a 454 or LS7. And thats way over budget...

what im really looking for is just an old beat up car car that has a 350 and is really cheap. I dont care about the body condition. And the interrier doesnt matter because its all comming out anyway. the main thing im looking for is that engine so I can start building on it.

I want to get the HP & Trq numbers in the 400s without a blower. How much HP can i exspect from full bolt ons. Im also a little worried about spraying Nitrous into a 20+ year old engine, so what exsactly should I have replaced before I start doing that? I would exspect pistons & rods but really dont wanna open it up untill I replace the Cam.

OK, i was thinking about this for one of my many firebirds lol

Buy a 350 (dirt cheap locally) and get the cylinders honed etc...That would run me around 1000

Summit has a package with all edelbrock components for the 350 including heads, cam, valvetrain, intake, etc etc

Get a carb on that package and call it good...

It will be hard and expensive to find a stock 350 3rd gen
