Default 305 HO Motor

hello new member here, just bought a 84 z28 its supposed to be all original. i was told is has an HO motor in it and they have more horse than a regular 305 because of a different cam and head valve sizes. is this true? and how can i tell if it is a HO or not? thanks

Optional engine for the Z28 was the RPO L69 305 @190 HP. Also you can check the eighth digit of the VIN number for the letter "G" if your Z28 has the high output engine.

I have an original/survivor '84 Z-28 that I must sell to make room for a '71 Vette I want to restore...

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for your "84 and what kind of shape was it in?

Thanks,
Paul

hi paul, the guy i got it off of was asking $600 but i got it for $400 all i had to do to it was put a pass floor pan ($300 installed). Little cracks in the paint on the front spoiler looks like bottom out scratchs? cigarette burn in the driver seat and the hatchback wont stay up by itself but other than that it is in good shape. but i think i got lucky it is also a 5 speed and a t-top to

Good Gosh - $400??? You got one Helleva a deal! For that price, I'd just leave my wife's Z28 in the driveway while I restore my Corvette rather than just "giving" it away.

I was thinking of buying an 86 with a 305 the guy says it starts and runs but it needs a headliner, fuel pump, and paint he wants 900 it's supposedly an originalz28 is it a little too much work or worth saving?

its not that bad of deal, if you can afford the work i wood buy it headlinr is nothing you dont really need it fuel pumps are cheap and a decent paint job can cost $1000+ depending on who you know and how much work you do yourself. or you can keep looking for one with a headliner running and already has a good paint job for $2000 and not have to do any work? but i might have bought it if i were you because i would want a custom paint job.

Iwould be doing the work myself hmm I might make the hour commute to go see it. How it dropping a 350 in it? I don't know if I would because it's still original(or I was told I plan to check the numbers) will it bolt up to the tranny?

yes, the 350 will bolt right in. the only modifications needed would be to the fuel system depending on what it has now and what you do with it. as for the fuel pump, it isnt all that hard to do. it does require removing the exhaust, so plan on just buying a cat back system when you do it, and you might as well get a new set of shocks if they havent been replaced to do while you have the axle down and tank out.
