305 build in my 1984 camaro (f41)
Ok im new to this site but i wanted to see if you guys have a different view on this.
I have a 305 in my camaro. I wantto build it up. bore it,crank, cam the whole nine yards. What do you guys think would be the best choices for it?(Ex. carbuerator, heads, headers, exhaust, mufflers, rear end, tranny. I'm tired of being told to just get a 350 and do it.I want to go with the 305. just because i havent seen that many hi powered 305's really. What you think?

well the reason people are telling you to get a 350 is cause it is a 4 bolt main and the lower end of the motor can handle the extra power where a 305 cant cause they are 2 bolt main. it would cost about the same to build both motors so it would once again be better to go with a 350

No, they arent "just" as strong. Not saying they cant be, there are guys pushing 500+ horsepower out of a 2 bolt main block... But how reliable is it compared to a 4 bolt main? When you got all that power beating down on that bottom end, and that crank starts floating at 6k, you're gonna regret building a 2 bolt main.

you can always take that 2 bolt to a machine shop and have it made into a 4 bolt with splayed outer bolts. stronger than a normal 4 bolt then. but its doubtfull that the 305 will be putting out that kinda power anyway unless your spending BIG bucks.
what are you wanting to do for intake? the tpi available on these cars are good for torque which when it comes down to it, thats what your after. you can have 4 billion horse power and lose to pintos if you dont have torque. of course you can go carbed which is a much MUCH simpler setup and much less costly.
invest the better part of your money on heads cam and pistons. thats where the better part of your power will come from.
what transmission are you running now? what rear?
what exactly are you wanting out of this build? 300 horse? there is a thread on building a 300+ horse 305 back in the third gen section i think.

Well first of all, its a 700R4 4 speed. Stock rear would be an open end diff., meaning one wheel peel. 350-400 out of a 305 is asking too much.

Ok my bad 4 speed with OD.to meits like OD is another gear. a cruising gear for better gas mileage. I dont see how its asking too much when it really only about 105 horse increase from 245 horse.(highest amount they had in 3rd gen)

with the right parts it can be done sure. but its big money to do so. the 305 TBI heads are some of the worst heads GM has ever made as far as flow and all that. so you will need a GOOD ( even better if you want that kinda power) set of heads and a mean cam. high compression or forced air.
bottom line is those 305's were ment to be basically a economy v8. and thats it..

A 305 TBI had somewhere around 190HP at the crank (or somewhere around that.) So to get in between there, you're gonna need about a 200HP increase, meaning all forged internals, large cam, free flowing heads with as small combustion chamber, etc. You would need all that anyways to get that out of a 350, but now your gonna need a cam with a gross lift of somwhere around .510-.520, making it ONLY a strip car, it would have absolutely no street manners, esp. with the high stall converter you would need.
Bottom line: No replacement for displacement.
