1990 Pully question
Hey, im new to this forum. I have a 1990 RS with 305. Ive done a restoration on the car and switched from the TB to a carb set up. Here is my issue I have been having. I took the one belt off, and put on acc. from an 84 set up. So i have twin belts and relocated the alt. to the passenger side. The issue im am having is the belts are not lining up with my water pump to well. I have march alt. and power steering brackets. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe there is something different with the blocks that im not sure of or something? Thanks

could be one motor had a short water pump and the other a long one. there are dfferent pumps and some have a longer reach from the pump to the block than others. that would make the pully end up in a different place. call and ask at the parts store and see what the difference is between the two. could be u just need a pump from an 84.

Make a note of what style water pump you use and which direction you're having it turn. With the original serpentine belt setup on your 305, the pump is a reverse rotation (counter-clockwise). If you use the same kind of pump, but route the belt to turn the pump pulley clockwise, the blades will cavitate and the engine will overheat. And the same goes for the other direction as well.

The alt., power steering pump and water pump are all for a 84. The water pump is a long water pump. The only thing im not sure on is the pullys. I know this is a foolish thing but i traded a friend my pullys for his.. He had a lot of chevy stuff. Put the crank pully is a 2 groove and the water pump pully is a 3 groove. This car i started on 5 years ago, and got in a 4 wheeler wreck. so i had to put it away for a while. now im realizing all the stupid things i started to do on this car. haha
