1986 Camaro knocking from bottom of engine

Externally, the 305 and 350 blocks have the same physical attributes, meaning the 350 will bolt right in place of the 305. Watch the heads though, as they could have different accessory mount holes on the front, depending on the vintage.

If you find a TPI 350; leave it alone. If you put on the carb, you will not pass emissions testing (if you have them). You will not have a fully functioning computer. You will need to figure out your fuel delivery...i.e mechanical pump, or regulated electrical. Unless you are willing to spend some time and money to go to carb, leave it be.

being that its an 86, there are a few things to watch for. 1987 changed to a different style head (centerbolt valve covers) and your intake wont match up. 1986 was the first year with a one peice rear main seal. 85 and older used a 2 peice. thats important because the flex plates are slightly different (or so i'm told). it doesnt matter what sort of fuel delivery the junkyard engine uses if you swap over your intake. i think anything 81 and older might have different accessory mounts, but i doubt it. i would say to just look for any 80-86 truck or car engine. a car with a 350 is much harder to come by though. but as long as you take your motor brackets off your 305, and use the flex plate from the 350, everything will simply bolt together. even the exhaust will match (but would be a good time for headers if you dont have them already)

I was looking on car-part.com and there are few 5.7's from early 80's impalas and blazers. There going for 500-750 bucks so i shouldn't have a problem getting one. In the meantime im gonna fix the 305 and put it back in. Then when i get the 350 ill be able to take my time with the rebuild while still being able to drive the car.

Also im pulling the engine with the trans connected so i can replace the messed up flexplate. Then after everything is back together and on the road ill do the suspension, brakes, then start saving for the 350 to build. I would also like to make it stick but i may just build up the 700r4. Would really like the manual though if it isnt too much of a hassel.
