need more acceleration
i have an 86 camaro 2.8 v6 automatic and i lose acceleration between 35 and about 80 i gotta floor it to get any kinda reaction. im not looking for crazy acceleration id just like it to go when i need to. it has plenty b4 i hit 35mph. i think its been like that since i got it in 2008 but i dont think i noticed it til i started commuting with it recently.
flowmaster exhaust with a removable cat section. cat is currently removed not for any thing but to keep in good shape so i dont have to keep buying them for smog. k&n air filters with that V shaped air intake thing that comes with it. no AC and the power steering belt disconnected. the power steering went out and i havnt seemed to need it since. plugs are from 2008, wires are from before i bought the car in 2008. fuel pump and filter replaced in 2008 along with distributor. ANY SUGGESTIONS? |
The 2.8 V6 Camaro with an auto transmission was never much of a go getter. Considering the car is 24 years old, it is probably giving you all it has to give.

prolly true. would it be safe to just cruise in drive rather then overdrive? there isnt some kinda spark plugs or intake i can get to make it just a little better?

Drive or OD is about the the same, it will be in D under 40mph and OD over that speed. No sure fire solution for your problem but a tuneup couldn't hurt. |
I used to have the same problem with my camaro, back in the 2.8 days, the sad fact is that the car is just a little to heavy for the 2.8's power. dont get me wrong, i love the 2.8 engine and it's desiged very well, (except for the intake) but sometimes you just need a little more grunt. for now you might try manually selecting second gear, you loose all your power when you shift into third, and I've noticed that the automatics in the third gen camaro's shift kind of erly. drive it like normal for a little while and note when it shifts, then when u manually select second, make it stay in that gear a little longer than usual, then let it shift, you'll notice that it has more power after its already going a little faster. as for fourth... if u wana go fast on a level its fine but dont bother trying to pull any kind of hill in it...

its a 2.8, there isnt much else you can do. is it efi or tbi? you could try cleaning the throttle body, mass air flow (if efi), and intake cleaning. ive noticed most benefits from cleaning the tb and maf and not so much the intake.
