Default 89 RS Shift Points

Help! When I floor the gas from stop, my auto tranny shifts at something like 3500 RPM so the car moves like a slug. Any suggestions?

I did check the pedal and there is some play in it but other than that nothing it stopping me push it all the way to the carpet. If I put it in a lower gear it will rev freely to the red line.

Thanks
Ashley

Sounds like your tranny is slipping. You need a rebuild. Check your fluid level first. It could be low or burned smelling.

Ashelyyour kick down cable most be lose or not hooked up, i dont think its sliping becuase you said it revs up if you put it in a lower gear. check to see if any cables are loose or not hooked up. let me know if this helps if not write back and let me know.

Definately not slipping, I know from experience what that feels like, usually followed by a much lighter bank balance.

No the car just shifts way early as if you are just driving around town.

Kick down cable Tony? Ok let me see if I can find anything, where am I looking? Under the hood, somewhere on the transmission? Ok I looke dit up, found near the throttle body. Ok will check it thx.

When I first posted all I remember was "3500" and "slug" and talking in my ear. ( i don't remember what was said though) After rereading your post I see it could very well be the Throttle Valve (TV) cable. On a TH350 it is used for kickdown. But on a 700R4, which your car should have, it does more. It controls line pressure and shift points along with downshifts.
Open the throttle wide and the cable should be tight like a guitar string (it should be on the linkage next to your throttle cable). If its not then you need to push on a "D" shaped metal tab and pull the cable housing out, away from the end. Then mash the throttle and it will self adjust. You will hear a clicking noise. Early cables like on the TH350 did not self adjust. If the end is broke off then you either replace the cable or you may be able to get a repair part to replace the broken plastic on the end.

Thanks all, it was the kickdown cable. Drives like a new car now.
