Convert Auto To Manual Transmission in 86?
#2
Idk. But somebody told me once they thought my transmission had been swapped from an auto to a manual. I'm sure it can be done. But it would require a lot of blood sweat and tears...and cash. Does anybody know if theres a sure way to tell if my car was a manual from the dealership? Like a VIN number or something?

This topic gets covered about once a month. The first thing I always ask is why? I know its more fun to shift, but the fact is, most of these cars came with the 700R4 auto, or the T-5 manual, which wasn't able to handle the torques of 350's....at least with enough reliability to install them from the factory. That is why all 350's got the auto. It will not be a cheap swap.
You will need:
1. a V8 trans (V6 T-5's don't mate)
2. balanced flywheel in the place of the flexplate.
3. Clutch assembly (pedal, clutch, pressure plate, pedal, slave. etc.
4. Driveshaft? I don't recall the difference in length.
5. Plug up the fittings on the radiator. (you won't leak coolant, but you'll have ATF coming out for a little while), or get a non Auto radiator.
6. Shifter assembly.
7. Depending on year, a neutral safety switch.
8. Depending on year and induction, a possible ECU flash.
Is that worth it?

Okay, we are back on this project and going to make the decision once and for all. DJS, do you know what it wold take to even get the shifter to fit where the automatic shifter once was?
I am thinking of a floor mount pedal with a hydraulic throwout bearing.
Did these cars come with a 8 cylinder option? If so, then was there a specific manual transmission that came with them? If not, does anyone have a recomendation?
Thanks.

Here is a sticky from our 3rd Gen Drivetrain/Transmission section: https://camaroforums.com/forum/82-92...ion-how-65741/
Which, by the way, is the section to where I'm moving this thread.
