1986 Berlinetta help
My son has bought a 86 Berlinetta, we need to find parts for the dash and are coming up empty handed. does anyone know where we might find parts for it, or can we take the dash out of a 83 and put in it. i assume it bolts in just not sure of the heater/AC controls.

I can not say for sure about the 83 but I would not be surprised if a 83 was different from an 86. There were some pretty big changes in 84 and again in 86. IMO the 86 up are the better designs. If I had to swap to the 83 I would try to take everything dash wise. I am not sure when GM switch to the servo doors from the vacuum design. It was somewhere between 86-89 although I also seem to remember they had a few odd ball servos driven doors before they switched over to all Servos. Your issue will be the controls. You are talking redirecting vacuum verses switch's and relays. If it was me and swapping the dash was the only options I would search out another 86.

Thank you for the reply I will let you know what I get into. The main problem I see is the AC/heater controls. but I have the remove the dash anyways to find the wire short that is in there somewhere. the windshield leaked pretty bad is there a chance that the water could have damaged the BCM. To be honest I just found out what that was last night. this is my first time trying to figure out this many electronics. I am a 60's car guy, and this electronic stuff is kicking my behind.

I don't know about '86 but for 4th gens there's a guy on eBay that repairs them.
Otherwise you're probably wrecking yard shopping if you can't get a new one.

A body control module in a 86? That is not a thing. Even the early 4th gens did not have BCMs. I believe the 96 OBD2 was the first Camaro with a body control module. Heck even the transmission was not controlled by a module until 94, Some 86's still have a carburetors.
Your 86 may have electric doors doors on your AC/Heater system but I am not sure. When the 3rd gen first came out is was all vacuum actuators and cables. If I remember right the 89 was had electrical controlled doors but they where just driven be a switch position.

Like with older cars when the AC/heat system are not working we would need an accurate description of what is going on. It is just a bunch of single systems located close together.
Example: if the defroster does not work, That could be caused by a broken door or the cable. If the air flow will not get hot that could be a heater core, cable or door. If the AC does not work well that is a whole other subject. Blower motor, and so on..... Cables do break, the contol
Most systems also use vacuum to control doors some even have complicated vacuum switches instead of cables. Since many people do not understand this and the confuse the vacuum system with emission item they will disconnect/remove the vacuum lines and remove the vacuum storage canister. If you have slider controls your pulling a cable. if you have a rotary switch you are using vacuum. As the tech got cheaper and the under dash got more crowded GM started using electronic servos to control the doors. I remember a lot of issues with the 88 pick-ups. 88 pickups where an all new design. Not sure when the camaro got its redesign. A quick google search show a vacuum canister that fits a 1986-1988. I would guess that meant the camaro got a redesign in 1989.
