Default Where can I install temp gauge?

Ok so I have an 86 Z28 and my temp gauge is broken. I know it would cost over 200 to fix this problem and I dont have that kind of money. My Check Engine light is on due to overheating so I believe it is my thermostat. But I would like to get a cheap temp guage from Adavance auto to make sure im not overheating anymore. Question is how do I install this? Can I just screw the probe into my waterneck where there is another sensor?

i used the port on the bottom of the drivers side head between the 2 and 4 cylinder. then routed it through an existing hole in the firewall and up my a-pillar. mine wasnt mechanical though, it was electronic.

Why would it cost $200 to fix your stock gauge? Have you tested it? Maybe the sender is bad? If you must go with another gauge go electric and you could also mount it to the bottom side of the center vents. Pull the dash pad and makes some small holes that would not be seen if it is ever removed
