whats happening?,, locking up
ok im on the way home from work and then out of no where my rear wheels lock up and so i pull into a driveway to see if something broke off or something, and i didnt see any thing so i put it in reverse and went to back out and it jerked like crazy as i was backing up, and when i put it in drive again and took off it seemed that everytime it went to shift from first it would kinda slip and then lock up again. so i go home put it on stands and put it in drive and you could hear all kinds of knocking clanging in the rear end so i took it all apart and pulled out the 4 spider gears and they were perfectly fine and then someone told me that it could be all the springs in the brake drums so i took them off and everything seems to be in place and there isnt any broken peices but everything is covered with dirt and stuff in there so i dont now,,, has anyone else had this problem??

i had the same exact problem with my 91 rs with rear drums. I ended up paying like 400 and kept on havin to go back in to get the brakes/wheel cylinders, serviced. until i crashed it in the rain and the brakes were still lockin up on the way home from the wreck. it was a total btw.
its bad in parking lots too huh? maybe bleed the line and replace the lines if you can. ????

mine use to lock up on me after they had been sitting awhile. turned out to be a leaking brake cylinder gettin crap all over the drum. Replaced it and its fine now

I bought my camaro really cheap with a bad rear end. You will probably be better off just changing the whole thing out if you can find a good used one. Unless you are wanting to change the gearing or something, then I would get in touch with the guys at richmond gear. They can help you to get everything you would want for your rear end.

I have just solved that problem on my camaro. It turned out to be that the differential had leaked all of the fluids out and the seal on the front of the differential (where the driveshaft is connected) had gone bad. It was cheaper to just find a new rear end and bolt the thing right up. Its a easy job and I can guide you through step by step if necessary. Took me about 5 hours in total to get the old read end out and the new one in again.
