what rear axles and gears will fit my 87.
Hey, im looking at a few things, 373 posi from a g-body, and im wondering if it will fit my 87 f-body lol.
Also, 2003 silvardo 373 posi rear axle, will it fit my 87? |
NO......not even close on both rears. Only 3rd & 4th gen rear axle assemblies will work or if you or if have extra $1200 to $2400 for a 9" or 12 bolt made for your car.
|
don't quote me on this, but iirc you could swap the gears themselves into your current axle.
btw, the posi in the Silverado is one you DON'T want. it will allow as many as 4 full rotations of one tire before locking |
Another guy says hes got a 373 posi in his malibu, he will sell me the 373 gears and carrier for 300$, will this fit in my 87?
|
Thats a rip... $300 for just the carrier assembly?
Anyways, what you have under your camaro is a GM 7.5" 10 bolt. There is also an 8.5" 10 bolt, so don't get them confused. |
For the carrier and gears. But will it fit my camaro? Thats what im trying to figure out :P
|
Well is it a 7.5" or 8.5" carrier? Does it use 27 or 29 spline axles?
|
I couldent answer that, but if you tell me how to check, ill do it now. :D
|
Up to late 89 all F-body cars with 10-bolt 7.5/625 dia gears had 26 spline axle shafts. Buying used gears sets is a money lossing situation. You are not going to be swapping gears in your present rear, due to the carrier & axle shafts for starters.
Also you need to do a lot more research concernning rear gear changes besides some of the mis-info in the short replies here. |
Well, my bad about the axles. I was thinking 27 spline because that gets thrown around quite a bit on JF.
10 bolts are a dime a dozen. It's not worth trying to swap carriers, gears, and axles. Find a used 10 bolt LSD, or even preferably a 9 bolt borg warner from an F body with disc brakes. Both will bolt in with no modification, except brake lines and proportioning valve. |
