Default Valvestem question

Just wondering if some one could give me a rough idea of how much it would cost to take my 1986 z28 305 in to get the valve stem seals replaced.. Im aware doing it yourself would be between 18-40 dollars for the seals. But i dont know how to do it..

Anyways.. any info helps thanks

From the hip, Im gonna say that would be about 4-6 billable book hours. What do most shops charge now? 75 an hour?? So 300-450 bucks...Hardly worth it if yer just getting a quick puff of smoke when you start the car. Im going to assume your new at this. Dont start tearing things apart yet or taking it to a shop. How many miles on the engine and what is it doing that makes you suspect the valve seals?

haha yes im new to this.. Trying to follow in my fathers foot steps... Anyways

When i start the car yes it does a puff of white smoke.. Than goes away.. a friend also told me when i floor it down the interstate from behind it looked like black smoke coming out... It also smells like burning oil with maybe a burning rubber mix. The guy i bought it from said it could be valvestem seals.. its has 165,000 miles on the engine. Runs great tho

A puff of smoke when you start it up can be because of bad seals.
Blowing blue smoke when getting on it on the highway is piston rings.
Blowing black smoke when getting on it is usually from carbon build up, especially if the car hasn't been run hard very often. Hence the term "blowing the carbon out".
While cruising down the highway, take your foot off the gas pedal for a couple of seconds, then get on it again. If you get a big puff of blue smoke, your valve guides are worn.

If it's black while accelerating hard (foot to the floor), then that's carbon. Blue is oil. If it's puffing smoke while loafing down the road, it's an engine wear issue. Did you just get the car? If it has been babied a lot, or spent most of it's life doing city driving, then it most lkely has a build up of carbon on the pistons and heads, and more highway driving may help to clear some of it out. If you suspect a carbon build up, consider giving the inside of your engine a steam cleaning. Sorry, it's a ricer, but the concept is still the same. Some of the comments are entertaining. I guess some never heard of water injection before.
