Last I checked, a transfer case is used to dirrect power to the front and/or rear wheels in a 4x4 setup, but it could be some inacurate name he's picked up from someone who didn't know what they were talking about, or didn't know what something's s'posed to be called....

since we are on the topic of transmissions... i think my syncronizer (spelling sucks so bear with me)is going out... When i come home, i back into the shed i park it in. Ill pull up, come to a COMPLETE stop, then try and go into reverse and i grind them like CRAZY! Also i have noticed its sometimes difficult to swith gears, sometimes its switching at all, sometimes it just between one or two gears... any ideas?

Your clutch is going bad or not engaging. Check the fluid.

It's more likely a bad slave cylinder than a clutch, especially on such an old car. If the fluid is low, check for leaks, as the slave cyl. is MUCH easier to install than a clutch, at least on most cars. Never done it on a Camaro, but they are pretty easy to work on, and I doubt this will be an exception. If the fluid is low, however, it just takes standard DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid. NEVER a petroleum or silicone based fluid, as the petroleum will swell the rubber seals, and the silicone won't absorb water the way the glycol based DOT3 and DOT4 will, which leads to corrosion. My guess to what happened is that your clutch fluid became saturated, and eventually water settled in the lines and caused it to start rusting out, since brake fluid only absorbs about 6% of it's weight in water.

Did the clutch start behaving any better when you added fluid?
