most have a govener stopping you anywhere from 108 to 115. My RS could easy do way faster, since when im goin about 110 im only at say 2750 RPM. But its all up to that WONDERFUL little govener... which is probably the only reason im still alive today so i shouldnt knock it to much...

Top speed is limited to 115 MPH by the computer. Reason: In most cases these cars came stock with H-rated tires (speed rated 110/115 MPH).So to limit liabilty issues the top speed was limited.

Additional Note: Cars that had V & Z rated tires were not speed limited.

You can install a new chip with the Speed Limiter removed. However: Since your speedometer tops out at 85 MPH and your tires are not speed rated, why bother.

I dont believe the third gens are governed. My 91 I had to 120mph and my 84 135mph. And I know this in my 84 because I had autometer gauges. That is with 2:77 rear gears. They did not get there quick but still had room to go faster. Just the road did not.

All 3rd Gen cars without speed rated tires were speed limited. This was to prevent Liability Issues for GM. But over the years a lot of owners removed it from the ECM. So unless you were the orignal owner who is to say. One more note: BW 9-bolt 2:77 rears were NOT stock on 84 models.

You need a new chip (with the limited removed) for your cars ECM.
