Hey anybody have any idea about how fast a stock Camaro will go? Mines a 1983 with the 305 and an auto 700R4 tranny. I was going down the road a few weeks ago and got on this stretch with nobody around. So I thought I see what she had. My speedometer only goes to like 85mph but I had the needle waaaaay past that lol. If I had to guess I'd say that it felt like it was around 120ish maybe? It felt like I could have gone faster buut since I couldn't tell how fast I was going, I let off. I didn't see anyneed to stress the engine out if I couldn't even tell what I was doing.I plan on getting a tach from Summit Racing so I can tell how fast I'm going. Anyone know for sure how fast they would go?

 

it depends on your gearing. madmike with 2:77 gears said his was going 145 and still had more to go. i had mine at 120 or so at low rpms in 5th. id guess you would get scared before you top it out. but of course mines not auto, so it might go a bit faster. not sure though.

145 in over drive with my calibrated 160 mph Autometer. I was running out of free space on the road and had to slow down.
I have a book that has reprints of articles from mags like Road and Track, Motor Trend, Car and Driver.... When they did a comparison to the mustang they used an automatic with 2.73 and have the speed of 115 in 4th at 5000 rpm.
Car and Driver shows an 85 Iroc, automatic,TPI with a 3.42 ls doing 140mph in 4th at 4550 rpm.
I did a few small things to my car also. Intake, exhaust, hotter coil (important part at high rpm) msd plug wires tuned the carb, etc. But one of the real important items was the double roller timing chain. My stock one had so much slop I could damn near see the bottom teeth on the crank sproket with the chain still on!

 

Nexttime I place an order at Summit I'm going to get one of those 160mph tachs. I plan on getting some fulllength headers this week so maybe I will then. So it's not unreal that these cars might see 150mph? I know my brother was in a 95? Z28 and he said that he was going 145 once.

 

wouldnt doubt it. camaros are fast with the gears they come with. the v 6s can go that fast too. they take longer though, but they can. im gettin all new gauges and then ill top it out. by then ill have my 383. so it might go a bit faster from higher rpms.

 

i would reccoment NOT hitting high RPM's with a stroker.. youll blow it to bits. IDK the limits, but i know that you can not run high RPM's on a stroker.

I know that the TBI models have a speed limiter for 115 MPH. But i think i heard that the TPI models do not have one. The carb im not sure on however.

 

my stockish 305 tpi, with the 700r4, 2.73 rear, topped the speedo at 145, but with the speedo being slow by 1 mph per 30 mph, it was actually 160. i did it on a bridge that was about a mile and a half long, and i started at about 55 mph. i have a video on my phone, just no way of getting it online

 

Your math is off. If your speed reads 30 and is actualy 31 then when it reads 60 it would be 62........that would make actual speed 149.8 when reading 145.

i dont mean to be mean, but i know a guy who has a 383 with 600 hp and a radical cam in it, and he had it up to 7400 rpms and still could have kept going. of course it was strictly racing parts, but i wanna get at least 5500 or 6000 rpms out of it.
