Default thermostat

finally decided to change out my thermostat today because since i got the car unless i was really pushing it on a 110 degree day the temp gauge wouldnt come off of the bottom peg. even added a second gauge and changed the sending unit. nothing so i came to the conclusion of stuck open thermostat. well i went to undo the bolts and one snapped. oh great lucky me. and my hypothesis was wrong. there was no thermostat. got the pleasure of extracting a broken bolt. but now i have really really good heat. wondering why the P.O. took the thermostat out. took it on a 75 mile drive across city streets, freeways, and mountain roads (50 miles of it being steep mountain roads) and didnt overheat at all.

Because some think that an engine without a thermostat will automatically run cooler. And it can under certain circumstances, as you found out.

Maybe the thermostat stuck closed and the previous owner simply took it out and sold the car, thinking that there was a bigger problem...

wow that blows, and i know when i had my P.O.S. ford probe, the thermostat was stuck closed while driving home one day so i just took it out and never put it back in, i figured a $300 eBay car wasnt worth fixing at all lol it was just the $4 a gallon 4cyl summer beater

uh my guess is that with the 300,000 miles it had on it that something happened to cause it to loose oil pressure and well kaboom. however my oil pressure sending unit was shot so i dont know for sure. mike is good. just kinda chillin out. was real bummed when the lady plowed into his 92. but now he has the 350 and i think is happier.

planned things to do when i get his engine before putting it in the car: timing chain, possible lt1 cam(hear good things about it without even having to buy a brand new cam), obvious intake manifold gasket if i do the cam, valve cover gaskets, and cleaning up the engine bay and make it look nice.

Only 300,000 miles? I think you may have gotten a pretty good life out of it.
When you see M.M., ask him if he wants to come back. Some people miss his wit and charm! I think I know what his answer is gonna be though.
You also might wanna make sure he doesn't have a wrench in his hand when you ask!!!
