tailshaft gears for speedo?
im going to be getting a 3.73 rear for my car, and im wondering where i can get a set of speedo gears? im not sure yet whether i will buy new or get one from a junkyard, but probably a junkyard. if i pull it off the truck (like a mid 80's 1500 or so), should the gears fit my 700r4?

RE: tailshaft gears for speedo?
the gears should fit on the tail shaft of the trans.
I did it on my 700r4 I took a trans out of a chevy s10 you just have to heat them up carfully and pound them off the trans. The gears in my trans were plastic so that was tricky getting those off. the ones on the truck will be metal.
If I would have know I would have sent you the gears I had. I think I tossed them out though.

You also have to consider the height of your rear tires. If you search on the web you should be able to find a calculator. See how tall your tire is, and the rear gear ration. You may also need the sleave that the driven gear goes in. There is a long and a short for the smaller and larger gears. The one on the output shaft may be the correct one already. Most times it is. I don't know where this person thinks it is steel. Both the drive and driven gears on the 700 should be plastic.

go to your local tranny shop for the gear's. with this info go 1 mile at 60 miles an hour on the speedo and time it. then let them know how long it took then they will tell you how much you have to change the gear tooth count.

I think this would be much esier and more accurate.

Also the gears are color coded so if you see what color your drive gear is you will know if it will work with what ever driven gear you get. If you need to replace the drive gear then you need to pull the tailshaft house off. I went from a 3:43 to a 2:77 rear gear ratio and just had to replace the driven and sleeve that it fits in.

thanks guys. can it be changed with the tranny in the car? i know my engine is comming out sometime this winter, and was wondering if i should take the trans out with it. im building up a 350, installing a 2400 rpm stall convertor and some more stuff along the way, and possibly getting into the trans.
