Default t5 < t56

I was lookin into swap out my 700r4 and go down to a junkyard get a kit to replace my 700r4 with a 5 speed. However, i was lookin up the reviews and it turns out the t5 kinda sucks. I guess its only rated for 300 ft lbs of torque? Right now my camaro is a 305, but down the road i might put it a 350 in it the 305 is built up a little bit, its got an LT1 cam in it and a few other upgrades. And i would like to have a tranny thats gonna last. Rumor has it that the t56 trannys are pretty good. Where can i get a t56? And is the t5 really that bad, i mean my camaro is a street car, my project now is a big block chevelle, and my camaro is my everyday car. Would i have any problems with a t5? my camaro probably has in the ball park of 250 horsepower, came stock with 255 ft lbs of torque, no idea how much it has now. Thanks

P.S: if your gonna post to tell me not to swap it to a manual, dont waste your time or mine, i got the expertise to do it and i got my heart set on the 5 speed. Thanks

im runnin a t-5 right now. Seems to be holding up ok. I can tell a difference in it though, after only 15k and MOST of that is easy drivin. Not to bad of a tranny if you can find one cheap to hold ya over till you can find a t-56. Your BEST bet is to find a doner car with the t-56 and gank the parts off it as you go.

im kinda goin back n forth with swapping to a manual, if i didnt have a chevelle id be all for it but i wanna shift most of my money toward the chevelle, i got a B&M megashifter and maybe if i get a shift kit that will suffice, be a lot easier and less expensive then swappin to a manual. especially because the t5s dont hold up too well

i personally will never buy another stick unless its another sports car. but just an everyday car or truck. AUTOMATIC all the way.

it all depends on the time and money you want to spend. i would just leave the maro stock untill your done with your other toy. well, as stock as it can be from here on. lol

This is a post I've been looking for. Doing a swap or upgrade so to say. What I'd like to know is can you take a 5 speed out & drop in a 6 speed without having to change everything like bell housing, clutch setup etc. I don't mean to jump into a post about doing an auto to manual but you guys seem to have a jump on this topic. The 86 I'm looking into buying has a 5 speed (with 15K miles on it), so if I'm going to do anupgrade to a stronger trans it might as well be a 6 speed... right? What do ya think? Should I stay 5 speed or change to 6 if I buy the car.

as far as I know they dont make a 6speed that mates up to where the old 5speed would have. Most built manual trannies to replace 5speeds are either another 5M or a 4

this is the post ive been looking for too! i just redid my 84 Maro with a fresh, lightly modified 350 and it has the t-5 in it. i dont want the t-5, its too low end torquey for me. i want to get a 6 speed ( i hear thats what the t-56 is) and from some pictures ive looked up, the two trannys seem to have the same bell housing mount plate, but im not sure. so if anyone helps this guy out, let me know too! anywho, good CCarRocks, im there with ya man.

P.S.- if i find the t-56 and she works, anyone want a fresh t-5?? its got 18,000 i believe, works really well (just goin through too many tires) peace!
