Default starter just clicks repeatedly

I just got back to working on my '86 Iroc which has a TPI 305 with A/T.

1.) While laying new carpet it appears that I disconnected the wires from the gear selector switch. I looked in my haynes manual and it looks like the purple and yellow wires connect to this switch, however there are 4 contacts for this switch, which is really 2 switches. Do any additional wires need to be connected to this switch?

2.) When I connected the purple and yellow wires to the gear selector switch and turned the ignition, the starter sputters or clicks repeatedly, but the engine does not turn over. Is this possibly a ground issue?

Thank you for any Help!

There should be 6 wires hooked to the switch on the gear selector. Neutral start, park/neutral and reverse lamps. Maybe while you were making love to your carpet the interior lights were on a while and the battery is now low.

Dude, seriously? It just sits and clicks? its only one of three things.....

1) Your battery is dead

2) Your starter is cooked. Maybe you fried it during the rewire....

3) You dont have power to the starter. Koncked something loose, burned a fuse or a loose ground. Check the LARGE red cable that goes to the starter for power. Should be a constant hot.

Im guessin number one or three.....

Good luck.

SWEET...Mikes picking on somebody else.....

Well ya know the guy was giving too much info when he said what he was doing to carpet.
What a person does behind closed doors is thier own bizz and should be kept to themselves.

But my mind is not always in the gutter. Some times I have to move it so yours can pass by.

Hey guys,

Sorry for using the incorrect terminology with regards to installing new carpet in my car. I guess the last I had to worry about having someone make fun of the words I was using, I was in 7th grade. Since that wasalmost 20 years ago, I'm sure you can understand. I'll try not to make that mistake again.
