questions about puttin turbo on my v6 camaro
I have a 88 camaro coupe and it has a 2.8 in it i am going to put a 3.1 in it but i want to lay out some numbers.I am wanting to build the 3.1 and put a turbo on it but don't know what size to use and would it be worth it.I want to roll v6 but pu out power
If I was you, I would forget about the turbo thing and spend the money on a V8. You would have to do some serious modifications to just about everything to a V6. The amount of money that you would have to spend on the 6 would be about as much as it would cost to just throw in an 8. Also turbo setups are not cheap. Even if you can find a turbo on eBay or anywhere else you stil have to modify your exhaust. Fuel delivery. Im not sure if the 6 can even take the invreased compression that would be built up. So in short I would not try to do a turbo. Go with a V8.
my friend is putting a turbo on his 88 2.8. he got the turbo from one of my dsm friends and so far its going pretty easy. as long as you dont run more then 8 pounds of boost everything should hold up. but i would go for the v8 because the turbo is a lot of work and extra money
Going with a V8 is the only commmon sense thing to do. I am pulling out my 305 this week to install a 383. Who ever wants it can get it. It is in very nice shape. No leaks. Everything has crome on it. Even the center bolt crome valve covers can go with it. The easiest thing to do is to put a carb and a pressure regulator on it and ride. Do away with the electronics... I ran this motor in the 1/8 it ran my car 8.90s so not that bad. It has aftermarket cam and head work.
In the late 80's GM and McLaren designed a 3.1 V6 turbo that was put in the Grand Prix
205hp @5200 RPM
225 ft/lbs Tq @2400 RPM

In the early 90s GM also made a DOHC 3.4L V6 In the Lumina Z34, Grand Prix GTP, and Monte Carlo Z34
210-220hp@7000 RPM
215-220 ft/lbs Tq @4000RPM
But it would still be a hell of a lot cheaper to go with a V8

I can't rember the year but i know the pontiac gta had the 2.8 turbo and it was faster than the corvett that year i think it was 87 so in theory if you really wanted to
you could order most of it from the dealership pre fab'd
either that or go to the bone yard hunting for that or an 80 buick regal t-type or GN.
i've put a complete drivetrain out of one of thoes into an 62 buick spical before.
