Please explain gear ratio and which I should get.
Hey guys, I think Im going to change out my rear end gears. When using rear ratio, does the first number (as in 4/11) mean turns of the axle or tire? (IE 4 turns of ?? equals 11 turns of ??)
Now, what gears should I choose? I want off the line 'pull', and to be able to smoke my tires. (my 1982 Z28 has NO off the line power) I dont want something as severe as a 4/11(Ive been told thats too drastic), and I want to have some highway cruisability. (7 mile trip to work, not much more..) Anybody know where to get them used? Thanks. -Scott

RE: Please explain gear ratio and which I should get.
The gear ratio is (how many revolutions of the drive shaft)how many revolutions of the wheels) ie: 4.10:1 means the drive shaft turns 4.10 times for the rear axle to make one complete turn. The lower the gear ratio ( higher in numerical value) the better within reason. 4.10 is pretty low and used on racers and ****. so for every day use I would go with a higher but if you want in between you should go with the 3.73... its a good all around and thats what I hope to mod later on.

The higher gear ratio, number wise, will also help kill your gas mileage. Just keep that in mind. And increasing the rear end gear value will help ANY car off the line, powerful or not.
