Default Overheating problems

I drive a 91 RS. After some driving on the freeway, the car runs fine and the temp looks ok. But when the car is on traffic its temperature is starting to get hot. At one point it almost over heat. Idling when the engine is warm it gets hot quickly.
Another problem is the alternator... Everytime the alt meter seem like its always charging. Is that ba common problem. The car is a 305 700 tranny. Strong car for 167,000 miles.
If someone has any ideas let me know
thanks

im having the exact same problem with my 89 RS, the problem is the fan switch located between cyl. 6 n 8. you gotta get under the car to do it on a V8. the fan comes on at like the redline of the temp. gauge. jegs has a fan switch that turns the fan on at 195 degress for around $40, should help alot. also, changing the thermostat is always helpful
