Default New Holly Carb. Now car wont fire...

Got rid of my Q-Jet original carb. replaced intake with edelbrock 2101 and holly 750 carb. Can't get the timing right now.WhenI turn the key the engine just backfires like the timing is off...I checked and rechecked the initial timing. Think I may have to replace the distributor with one with vaccum advance. It's an '83 with a 305. HEI distributor with the electronic control.. Please Help!!

Replacing the dizzy would be a good start. And while doing so make sure you did not put it in 180 degrees out. And of course double check the firing order

MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THE DISTRIBUTOR,SEE IF YOU PUT IT IN 180` OFF.EASY WAY TO DO THIS IS TURN THE MOTOR OVER TO GET IT ON TOP DEAD CENTER/ ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE ON #1 CYL. TAKE YOUR DISTRIBUTOR CAP OFF AND SEE WHERE THE ROTOR BUTTON IS POINTING.IT SHOULD BE POINTING AT OR NEAR #1. IF THIS IS RIGHT,CHECK THE FIRING ORDER.YOU MIGHT HAVE A PLUG WIRE OUT OF ORDER.YOU DID MAKE A GOOD DICISION ON CARBS.I PUT A 650 HOLLY ON MINE AND LOVE IT. JUST WONDERING, WHAT MADE YOU GO WITH A 750 THEN A 650. GOOD LUCK ON YOR CAR.

750 is WAY too big for that 305, send it back for a 650 tops. Either your distributor is in the wrong place, or your firing order is off.

Hm... well i may be to far in to send the carb back... so lets ignore that at the moment.

I'll have to recheck the distributor placement. Pretty sure i didn't put it 180 off but you never know. So no reason i should need a different distributor?

Really appreciate the help! dyyying to get this thing running again

Hey there slick. No need to yell out what I just said to check. Need to tone it down and turn the caps lock off.
I also stated replacing the distributer would be a good start. Your computer is not going to adjust the timing properly without all the sensors in place.

750 aint bad for that motor. my dad ran a 850 double pumper on his 302 z28. and we got a 850 double pumper on our 350 for our truck. the thing never ran better.

Your blow back valve in the carb is probably shot if you let it backfire through the carb take it off and take it to a carb shop and have it place on a flow meter and checked, that is what happened to my 750 Holley
