Default NEED QUICK ANS...202 or Vortec heads??

Ive got a line on two purchase options for heads, but I need some help.

1) Vortec heads (complete) and manifold for 350 bucks. The seller says they are older Vortec heads just pulled off a 383 and all will bolt right on my mid 70's block. (the manifold is brand new 'Brock Performer, but Im already running one....)

2) A set of "202" heads, stripped, for 50 bucks. Im twice removed from the seller but Im told that these were the older heads that guys used to use to make racing/high HP engines with. They are stripped, so Im wondering if a)they will be more expensive in the long run to build up (compared to the complete vortec b)will they perform better or worse than vortec heads.
The only info I have on them is '202'.......

You need to get the casting numbers from the "202" heads. What the seller means is that they have 2.02" intake valves. They could be your same crappy flowing heads just with larger valves.

That sounds like a good deal for the Vortecs though. Keep in mind you're still limiting yourself by using stock vortecs as they have 1.94"/1.60" valves and can only accept up to .465" cam lift, unless they've been modified. They're good for probably 25-30hp over the stockers.

i personally wouldnt go with either. the stripped heads, you dont know if theyre any good sicne theres no info on it, or known if they are cracked or not. and vortec heads are not much of an improvement over the older style either. save your money and get a set of iron eagle heads for $600 assembled, new.

Im trying to do this on a budget, as I will never get this money back in resale. 25-30 horse is where I want to start at......I wont tear the engine down for any less. How much will a set of the aforementioned Iron Eagles net me? 40-50?

FYI, the Vortec heads are one of the best performing "factory" iron heads you can get your hands on. They have a better flow design compared to the old type heads. With the bare "202" heads, you're gonna have to buy all the valves, springs, and rockers, as well as get them machined. Are the Vortec's ready to bolt on, with not a lot of wear on them? Like anything, it all depends on what you want to get out of the engine and how much you want to spend.

I've seen dyno results that show Vortecs are a better bolt on for a mildly built engine than most aftermarket heads.

I would just make sure they are the L31 vortecs. The term "older vortecs" would tell me to check the casting #.

The other thing to consider with the cost is the vortecs in stock form use a self aligning rocker arm, if the guy has them get them also.
