Default n00b looking for a bit o' Q&A from the 3rd gen crowd

Hey Yall,

n00b here to the forum, just registered today. I am considering purchasing a 3rd gen from a guy inmy areaw/ 141 k on it. He's asking 2500.

Pardon the n00bishness, but what should I be looking for when I go and test drive it?

It's a convertible and has had a new top, tires and brakes put on.

Can you steer me in the right direction for what to look for when I go havea looksey? Specifically what I most likely will need to replace so I can negotiate the $ down a bit if possible. Or, correct me, is that price a steal with 141 k on the clock?

I know the struts will have to most likely be replaced, also that the gas shocks on the hatch will be shot also. Besides the glaring obvious issues like leaks, knocks, rips what should I be looking for and what should I avoid.

Thanks
Jay

rust is the number one issue. Look at the floorboards, both underneathe and check the carpets to see if they are wet.

Good to know--it has been a wet Utah Winter. We're at something like 150% of our regular snowpack.

If the body is badly rusted, it'll be a PITA cutting and replacing floorboards right? I've a few brothers handy with tools who are willing to wrench and teach, but the idea here is that there are lots of 3rd gens and I can keep looking right?

yeah cutting and replacing would not be very fun, also 141k is quite high and you never specified a year. But if rust is a problem for 2500 i would keep looking.

Built,

Thx for the replies...

It's a 1991, and he says its a V6 RS Convertible. Did the RS convertible come in a V6?

The '91 RS Convertible came either with a 3.1L V6 or a 5.0L V8, so you're safe there.

Sounds like a decent price to me- but keep your eyes open when you're checking it out and try to argue him down as much as you can anyway
