Default Mystery electronics

In replacing the heater core over the past few days (which, by the way, was a hoot, let me tell you) I removed a strange little doohicky from the passenger side footspace. It was located just right of the footspace, against the wall of the car, covered by carpet, and connected to the plastic red interior trim. Now the problem is that there is a four-pin connector coming out of one end and something like ten of the twenty or so screws that secure the cover and the contents are covered in some sort of factory glue, so rather than take it apart I was wondering if anyone here can tell me what the hell it is and whether the fact that it was never plugged in was a problem...

I also have a similar box on the drivers side, and it is also unplugged.

Thanks!

Thanks for the help but

They seem to be factory speakers, most likely with amps. How to connect themto an aftermarket radio, however, is beyond me.
